Mariella’s Restaurant at Capaia Wines (Cape Town)

Again… the other wonderful restaurant that I got to visit while in Cape Town as (also) in the quaint historical area of Philadelphia (read about the Pepper Tree here) which is just off the N7 heading out of Cape Town – was Mariella’s at Capaia Wine Estate.

Suggested by our wine-expert pal, La… who truly knows her stuff when it comes to wine & food .. as she was visiting Cape Town (and the friends there) after recently relocating to Johannesburg for love ❤ – and I was lucky enough to be in town at the same time! (Quick fact – La & I were at school together in Port Elizabeth … so we have known each other for almost 20years! These are the kinds of friends who know you… warts and all!)

We sat on the delightful terrace, soaking up the sun … with a view across the lands…. enough to make anyone feel like they were on holiday!

Sadly – no wine for me… but the ooh’s & aah’s around the table exclaimed the wine was not only tasty but reasonably priced as well… which meant that wine was not only consumed on the sunny terrace, but also bought to take home!!

We bypassed starters and jumped straight into main courses… with La, Shells (one of my besties from high school days) and I all ordered the Grilled line fish of the day (R109 – Served with French fries, herb butter and a choice of seasonal vegetables or a side salad) – I decided to be healthy and went with veggies only… and what a fabulous selection … The only negative of this truly delicious fish was that the portion size was more European than South African (i.e. a bit on the small side).

One of the gents ordered the Roast duck (R160 – Served with Lyonnaise potatoes (or in this case – French fries) and an orange sauce) – which not only looked delicious but was a generous portion size as well!

And the 2 remaining gentlemen were won over by the waiters house specialty suggestion of Oven roasted crispy pork belly (R99 – Served with creamy mashed potatoes and a Dijon mustard sauce). Again … another winner!

Would I return? Yes… they have beautiful seating on the outside veranda (terrace); plus indoor availability for the not so sunny days – the staff were friendly and knowledgeable and the food was tasty. Price wise – neither expensive or cheap for food.

  1. So many great dinner options – and I love the idea of sipping wine out on that terrace, looking over the vineyards! It really reminds me a lot of my hometown in California – similar rolling hills and vineyards.
