While HIM and I were in Cape Town, before our wedding guests started to descend upon the city… we had one wonderful day to ourselves to explore a bit of the winelands and surrounds.
We did a bit of wine (and cheese) tasting and then decided it would be time for lunch.
Now, there are LOADS of restaurant opportunities in and around Stellenbosch – with pretty much every winefarm offering some form of culinary delight.
But I decided to take HIM to a spot that I hadn’t visited in years and had always brought me wonderful memories!
HILLCREST BERRY ORCHARDS… with a fabulous shop offering all of their berries (frozen and fresh), jams, compotes, dessert toppings and gifts (to name a few) and of course their restaurant/tea-garden with a panoramic view of Banhoek Valley – makes it one of the MUST-VISIT places on anyone’s Stellenbosch tour.
In summer time, it is almost impossible to get a table outside in the tea-garden without a reservation – but even though it was a sunny Sunday in November – with the weather playing along (blue skies and sunshine) – we didn’t need to fight our way through the crowds for a perfect table – which in my books, made it a pretty perfect day!
HIM ordered one of the specials – Chorizo and Pea Risotto – which on first inspection looked a little on the small side, but in reality was the perfect portion size (as risotto can be quite heavy)
I ordered the Butternut, feta, lentil and beetroot salad – with a Harissa spicing… and it was delicious! Definitely a good mix of flavours and exceptionally filling.
In terms of returning – I honestly believe that this a bit of a gem, hidden in the Stellenbosch winelands… and a place to visit – even if you just want to find some awesome Christmas presents or stocking fillers – but remember, if you want to partake in their fabulous scones (served with their very own jam selection) – be sure to book a table 🙂
