I am back after a fabulous 10day break in South Africa… for friend’s wedding and of course to finalise the planning of my own upcoming wedding!
A special part of coming *home* is the fact that you get to catch up with family and friends… and sometimes this involves a 10hr road trip from Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay (yes people… 10hours… and I am well aware that this should normally take 5-6hours… however, we stopped at a wine farm for a bit of tasting in Robertson… then for a nice lunch at Tredici (more details to follow below) and of course a lazy drink and snack in George while waiting for the Golf tour boys to return our calls (another story for another day) – thus taking our journey time up to almost 10hours :))
Although this timing sounds a little crazy – I loved every minute of it – as I got to catch up with 2 girl friends (one of which is my Bestie and about to be one of my bridesmaids)….
Now everyone knows that road trips involve food…. especially long(er) road trips… and I have very vivid memories of eating at Wimpy in Mossel Bay (N2) on trips between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth (because it is the half way point between the 2 (whichever way you think of it :)) and of course there are Wimpy’s and fast food opportunities all the way along the route.
BUT – did you know that Swellendam has just upped the game???
Tredici (Italian for *Bakers Dozen = 13*) has opened up just off the N2, leading into Swellendam and offers a fabulous selection of freshly made breads (boulangerie), freshly baked cakes and treats (patisserie), a delicatessen and of course a sit down restaurant (ristorante).
The 3 of us settled down pretty quickly in the upstairs seating area – ordering coffees, waters and cooldrinks while gazing at their menu.
Shells opted for the Haloumi Salad (R65,00) and asked for some Ciabatta bread to be added to it (which they didn’t charge us for)
La ordered a Bacon & Brie Sandwich (R52,00) and it looked pretty amazing (and dripping with cranberry jam)
I was *lus* for a soup… and there were 4 on their menu… I ordered the Roasted tomato and Basil soup and was told that it wasn’t available – but that I could have the Butternut or Broccoli… so I ordered the Butternut, only for the poor waiter to come back 5minutes later to say that they only had broccoli soup (R45,00). After all that – the soup was still just what I wanted/needed and accompanied with some gorgeous ciabatta (that I can only assume was baked on the premises)
Would I go back? Well – if i was ever doing a road trip along the Garden Route again – the chances of me stopping here are 100%…. (Plus they also had gourmet looking square pizza’s with a thin base that I could have probably inhaled!!)
