While recently in Cape Town, my aunt took me out Durbanville way to try out a spot that she had great experience with previously…. namely, Isabella’s.
Isabella’s in Durbanville is one of 12 of these Franchise type cake & food shops… with their opening only 1year ago (2013).
I wasn’t sure what to call the place… “restaurant” isn’t right – nor is “coffee shop” as the Durbanville store offers dinner (Tuesday to Saturday) – as well as their infamous cakes, breakfasts & lunches… so what is the right category?
Decor is girly – pink, white, black and shades of grey - finished off with chandeliers and bold wallpapers
And their cake combinations had me drooling… (Carrot & Caramel, Raspberry Chocolate Mousse, etc)
But we decided to be as good as we could and ordered breakfast… I opted for the Mushroom & Rosa Tomatoes on Toasted Rye (Topped with homemade guacamole, a dollop of cream cheese, coriander and pesto - R48)
while my aunt ordered the Mini Frittata option (Two mini egg frittatas, one filled with bacon & parmesan, the other with courgettes & feta. Served with a tomato & rocket garnish - R49)
The food was delicious – but took forever. Now, I must state that they did inform us that the frittatas would take 20-25minutes because they are made from scratch… but we sat for almost an hour as the first batch apparently didn’t go too well… and coffee’s also took almost 15minutes between ordering and arriving, which made us worry that we had been forgotten about. BUT thankfully – we were on holiday & had a lot to catch up about… so the time didn’t negatively affect us.
I would be tempted to go back again… especially for their First Friday of the Month “cake tasting” – R55 eat as much as you like between 15h00-17h00.
